Make Up a Word and Its Definition

The post suggestion today on The Daily Post was to make up a word and it’s definition.

This made me think of something funny my daughter, Emma, said the other day. So I thought I would share.

First a little background for new readers that might come here from The Daily Post. My 7-year-old daughter has APD, which stands for Auditory Processing Disorder.  It’s a type of hearing disorder that cannot be corrected with hearing aids because the ear itself is fine. The problem lies in how the brain processes sound. So basically you learn coping techniques, and for the most part just live with it.

Emma’s APD is not severe, but it does result in her hearing things incorrectly very often.  And by very often I mean many times per day. It is especially an issue if there is background noise when you are talking to her. So she often gets bits and pieces of things you say and tries to figure the rest out in her head.

Being that she is young and still learning new words, this also leads to her incorrectly using new words as she will say what she thought they sounded like, etc.  Which creates some fun flub ups sometimes.

Being the little comedian that she is, she has embraced the goofy aspect of it and also sometimes just makes up words on her own, on purpose. And insists that they are words, and if they aren’t – they should be.  She’s very adamant about this.

Every time she does that it makes me remember when I was a kid and I swore that “until” should be spelled “untill“. I decided that it was stupid that it was not, and even used it incorrectly on purpose for awhile as my own sort of protest, if you will. So yeah, she gets it honest I suppose.  :)

Anyway, recently she came into my room and said to me, “Mom, Will is being indegreeable.”

I said, “He’s being what?”

She said, “He’s being indegreeable.”

I said, “Honey, I don’t think that is a word.”

She said, “Well, it should be.”

I said, “Well I have to admit, it sounds like a word.”

So just for fun I wrote it down, then I asked her if she could make “indegreeable” a word, what would be the definition. I wrote down precisely what she said, because I thought it was so cute. So of course the topic suggestion today made me think of it. This is what she said:

indegreeable: an annoying occurrence when two people fail to agree.”

    Great story!
I come from a family that made up words; a habit my hubby and I both have.
